Extreme weather conditions greatest risk for 2022
[{“type”:”text”,”content”:”This is the long and the short of the World Economic Forumu2019s findings in the latest Global Risk Report.nnThe 2022 Global Risks Report complied by the World Economic Forum paints a gloomy picture of the extent of the climate crisis currently facing the global community. The report clearly demonstrates the necessity of making the crisis real to people and this is as true for South Africans as the rest of the world. We need to seriously consider whether we have the tools we need to address the crisis and its impact on the national economy, and especially for the countryu2019s food security. nnOn food security in particular, South Africa already faces significant challenges, some unavoidable but many self-imposed. From property rights, road and harbour infrastructure, transferability of water rights, and the rapid increases in the national minimum wage to arbitrary quotas on labour migration, rural safety, and rising input costs such as fuel and fertilizer, South Africau2019s farmers are hardpressed from all sides. These challenges are compounded by the prevailing economic conditions as the world recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic and unpredictable weather events in a country which is already water scarce. nnNotwithstanding the global pandemic, the Global Risk Report finds climate change to be the biggest risk facing the world, along with its implications for agricultural production. Environmental impacts such as u201cclimate action failureu201d, u201cextreme weatheru201d, and u201cbiodiversity lossu201d are ranked the most severe risks according to this report. South Africa has already experienced increased drought conditions, flooding, wildfires, as well as pest and disease outbreaks over the last two years.”,”position”:0,”id”:”GhBkJIZStKTYTCtf”},{“type”:”image”,”content”:”https://agrisaonline.com/images/682″,”position”:1,”id”:”FTpDitmx5vTdZxoU”},{“type”:”image”,”content”:”https://agrisaonline.com/images/683″,”position”:2,”id”:”LA0WGaQMtvzGwuFu”}]
